There's something almost poetic about dropping a silent electric drivetrain into a 1969 Chevelle or a '72 Ford Bronco. You keep the chrome, the patina, the soul — but swap the noise and the fuel stops for instant torque and a charging cable. EV conversions on classic vehicles have gone from fringe hobby to a legitimate movement, and shops across the country are getting busier by the month.

But here's the thing nobody tells you upfront: going electric doesn't mean starting from scratch on every single component. A lot of what's already on your classic car is still very much in play. The trick is knowing what to keep, what to ditch, and where to source the right parts when OEM options no longer exist.

We dug into the growing conversion community — talking to independent shops, weekend builders, and parts specialists — to put together a realistic picture of what this process actually looks like from a parts perspective.

The Drivetrain Is Gone. Now What?

Let's start with the obvious. The engine, transmission (in most cases), fuel tank, exhaust system, and all associated plumbing are heading to the scrap pile or eBay. That's a given. What surprises most first-timers is how much of the rest of the vehicle is still perfectly usable — sometimes even ideal for conversion work.

The chassis itself is usually the first thing conversion builders celebrate. Classic American cars were built with beefy frames that can handle significant weight, which matters because EV battery packs aren't exactly light. A solid, rust-free frame is worth its weight in gold on a conversion project, and that's where your pre-build inspection budget should go first.

Brakes: Don't Even Think About Skipping an Upgrade

Here's where things get interesting. Electric vehicles are heavier than their ICE equivalents — sometimes significantly so once you factor in the battery pack. That added mass puts real stress on braking systems, and most classic cars were never engineered with that kind of weight in mind.

Conversion shops almost universally recommend upgrading to larger, vented rotors and higher-performance calipers. Many builders are pulling OEM brake components from late-model trucks or performance vehicles and adapting them to fit classic spindles. Aftermarket brake upgrade kits designed specifically for popular classic platforms have also started appearing from specialty suppliers.

The master cylinder situation is worth its own conversation. Traditional vacuum-assisted brake boosters rely on engine vacuum to function — vacuum that no longer exists once you pull the combustion engine. You've got two main paths: install an electric vacuum pump to keep the existing booster working, or swap to a hydro-boost or electric brake booster setup. Both approaches work, and both require sourcing the right components for your specific platform.

Suspension and Steering: More Compatible Than You'd Think

Good news here. The suspension geometry on most classic vehicles translates well to EV conversions, especially if the battery pack is positioned low in the chassis (which most serious builders prioritize for handling reasons). Ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings — these all stay, and they all need to be in solid shape before the build moves forward.

Steering is a slightly different story. Classic recirculating ball steering setups are functional but feel pretty vague compared to modern rack-and-pinion systems. A lot of conversion builders take this opportunity to retrofit a rack-and-pinion setup, which pairs naturally with the cleaner engine bay and improved weight distribution that comes with EV conversion. Aftermarket crossmember kits that make this swap feasible on popular platforms are widely available and worth the investment.

Power steering requires the same kind of rethinking as power brakes — no engine means no hydraulic pump. Electric power steering (EPS) conversions have become a cottage industry within the EV conversion world, with universal-fit units and platform-specific kits both on the market.

Cooling: Simpler, But Not Gone Entirely

One of the biggest misconceptions about EV conversions is that you can eliminate the entire cooling system. You can ditch the radiator, the coolant overflow tank, the thermostat housing — all of that traditional engine cooling hardware is history. But depending on your motor controller, battery management system, and charger setup, you may still need a smaller, dedicated cooling loop to manage heat in those components.

High-performance conversion builds in warmer climates — think Texas, Arizona, Florida — especially benefit from proper thermal management planning. The parts involved are simpler than a traditional cooling system, but they still need to be sourced, sized correctly, and installed with care.

Electrical: The Whole Game Changes

This is where classic car EV conversions get genuinely complex. The 6-volt or 12-volt electrical systems on vintage vehicles were never designed to interact with high-voltage EV components, and the two systems need to be kept carefully separated. Most builds retain a 12-volt accessory system for lights, gauges, wipers, and accessories, powered either by a DC-DC converter drawing from the main battery pack or by a separate 12-volt auxiliary battery.

Wiring harnesses on classic cars are often a mixed bag — brittle insulation, sketchy grounds, mystery circuits added by previous owners. Conversion builders consistently recommend doing a full harness evaluation and often a partial or complete rewire of the 12-volt system before integrating any EV components. Aftermarket universal harnesses and platform-specific reproduction harnesses make this more approachable than it used to be.

Parts Sourcing Strategy for Conversion Builds

One of the more practical realities of EV conversion work is that you're often shopping in two completely different markets simultaneously. For the mechanical components — brakes, suspension, steering — you're dealing with the same OEM and aftermarket suppliers you'd use for any classic car restoration. Quality matters here just as much as it does in a traditional build, maybe more, given the added stresses involved.

For the EV-specific hardware — motors, controllers, battery packs, BMS units — you're looking at a specialized supplier network that's grown considerably in recent years. Domestic suppliers have gotten more competitive, and the availability of purpose-built conversion kits for popular platforms (early Broncos, first-gen Camaros, classic VW Beetles) has made entry-level builds more accessible.

The smartest approach most experienced builders recommend: don't cheap out on the mechanical foundation. The battery pack and motor can be upgraded later. Brakes, suspension, and steering done right the first time save you headaches — and potentially much worse — down the road.

Is It Worth It?

Cost-wise, a serious classic car EV conversion isn't a budget project. All-in costs for a quality build on a popular platform typically run anywhere from $15,000 to $40,000 or more depending on range targets, motor selection, and the condition of the donor vehicle. That's before accounting for any cosmetic restoration work.

But for the right builder with the right car and the right goals, the result is genuinely remarkable — a vehicle that looks and feels like a piece of American automotive history, with the reliability and running costs of modern electric technology. The parts decisions you make along the way determine whether that vision becomes reality or becomes a very expensive lesson.
